A Greener Lawn with greenhouse
It officially feels like springtime in the GTA! Birds are chirping, flowers are blooming, and lawns should be lush and green... well, maybe not that last one. So what's missing? Why is your neighbour's lawn the star of the block, and how do you make yours the envy of the neighbourhood?
At GreenHouse, we have a secret weapon: Hector Gonzalez, one of our co-owners. He brings years of expertise in all kinds of outdoor maintenance, including many years working at a golf course. His passion for the game is matched only by his dedication to pristine turf, both at the golf course and his own home. You know what they say "don't trust a skinny chef". So why would you trust someone whose lawn isn't always in impeccable shape?
So, what's Hector's secret? It's MAINTENANCE! We know it might seem like the obvious answer, but a little TLC, especially in the springtime, can turn a sad lawn into a vibrant one.
Here are the top tips from our lawn expert, Hector:
Remove those weeds! If weeds are popping up, avoid heavy chemicals. Start by pulling out the larger ones, making sure to get the roots. This will be an ongoing process as your fresh lawn grows. But once your grass becomes thick and lush, it will naturally create a barrier between the sun and the soil, preventing weeds from sprouting in the first place.
Let’s get seeding! Even if your lawn already has grass, adding fresh seed will help it grow dense and lush. Be sure to choose seed that suits your lawn’s specific conditions, whether it thrives in full sun, shade, or a mix of both.
Top up on soil! A thin layer of light, fluffy, sandy soil will help your new seeds settle in. Use a mix of 50% top dressing and 50% sand and after applying it, use a leveling rake to fill in any holes or patches, creating a smooth, even surface.
After following these three essential steps, maintenance is key! Water your lawn immediately after applying seed and soil, then continue watering every day for the next 10 days for at least 10 minutes. For best results, water in the evening when the sun isn’t as strong, allowing the grass to absorb moisture effectively. After the initial 10 days, shift to watering 3 to 4 times a week. By day 15, if you've stuck to the plan, your grass should be full and tall—including some of those smaller weeds that were harder to remove earlier. Pull out any remaining weeds from the root and mow your lawn. If weeds persist, re-remove them as needed, but you'll start to notice fewer sprouting over time. Consistency is key! Keep up with weekly mowing and regular watering 3 to 4 times a week. In just one month, your lawn should be thick, lush, and thriving! For an extra boost, apply a slow-release lawn fertilizerduring week three and water thoroughly right after. Be sure to water frequently for the next 7 days to prevent burning your grass.
So, what are you waiting for? Get outside and bring your lawn to life!
